MANY HANDS -A CULTURAL CANOE JOURNEY Sun (Jan 28) 1pm

BY INVITATION  Sun, Jan 28 at 1pm
BY DONATION – THE PUBLIC IS WELCOME  Sun, Feb 4 at 2pm

The year 2017 saw a National Celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. One of the celebration events was a cross Canada canoe journey.  One of the very first legs was a 140 km canoe journey from the  Sunshine Coast to Vancouver.  Happily, British Columbia designated our celebration of this year as Canada 150+.  That “+” represented all those years and history long before Canada was born, or even thought of as “Canada”.

The Gibsons Paddle Club, along with Coast TV, Shaw TV and Moving Hands Pictures has produced a feature length documentary to reflect on those years that the “+” represents.  With the Canada 150+ journey, and the 2017 PULLING TOGETHER canoe journeys as backdrop, the movie “ MANY  HANDS” explores the past history of all of us, from long before 150 years ago.

CANALETTO & THE ART OF VENICE (Art Gallery Series) Sun (Feb 11) 2pm

CANALETTO & THE ART OF VENICE – at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace
Directed by David Bickerstaff
Running time: 85 minutes

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN open its fifth season with Canaletto & the Art of Venice, an immersive journey into the life and art of Venice’s famous view-painter. No artist better captures the essence and allure of Venice than Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto. The remarkable group of over 200 paintings, drawings and prints on display offer unparalleled insight into the artistry of Canaletto and his contemporaries, and the city he became a master at capturing. The film also offers the chance to step inside two official royal residences – Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle – to learn more about the artist, and Joseph Smith, the man who introduced Canaletto to Britain. Cinema-goers will embark on their very own 21st century Grand Tour, visiting the sites enjoyed by their 18th century counterparts and immortalised in Canaletto’s views – from the Rialto Bridge to the Piazza San Marco, and the Palazzo Ducale to the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Guided by Royal Collection Trust curators and the world’s leading experts in Venetian history, the film is not only a wonderful way to see the exhibition, but an opportunity to get closer to Canaletto and the city that inspired him.

Tickets $15. Student (17yrs and under) $10. Available at the box office on the day of the show.

RUMBLE: THE INDIANS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD (SC Film Soc) (Feb 17) 2pm

Genre: Doc/Music
Canada 2017
Runtime: 103 min
Trailer: Rumble

Directors: Catherine Bainbridge, Alfonso Maiorana

Synopis: This film is a celebratory examination of the suppressed role of Canadian and American First Nations writers and performers, and their contributions to popular music. The title comes from “Rumble”, the 1958 smash hit, instrumental single by Shawnee musician Link Wray, which was widely banned from airplay in the US.
Through dynamic archival footage, photographs, and a series of fascinating interviews with a variety of pop-culture celebrities and commentators, the film finely balances biographical sketches with historical context to finally reveal this long overdue missing chapter.
