Vancouver Chamber Choir
Jon Washburn, conductor

“unearthly beauty and awe-inspiring power… how celestial singers should sound”

Formed in 1971, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, with conductor Jon Washburn, is noted for depth and range of repertoire and excellent interpretive skills. The 20 singers delight audiences with selections sung in more than 35 languages, ranging from chant to folksong, traditional to avant-garde, singing a cappella, or accompanied either by piano, orchestra or jazz trio.

In addition to a busy home schedule of concerts, broadcasts, and educational programs, the Choir has toured throughout the US, China and Europe. A leading advocate of Canadian music and composers, the VCC has commissioned and performed more than 170 new choral works, and in a discography of some 40 recordings, several are devoted to Canadian composers.

To quote the music critic for The Toronto Star, “Jon Washburn’s Choir remains at the forefront of Canadian vocal ensembles.”

André Laplante, piano

“bone deep musical sensibility”

Acclaimed as one of the world’s great romantic keyboard artists, André Laplante is considered a musical magician. Critics have compared him to Serkin, Ashkenazy and Horowitz, placing him in the elite circle of virtuoso pianists who do not hesitate to take risks.

In addition to performing around the world, Laplante has taught for many years at the Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique in Montreal and at the Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould Professional School in Toronto, as well as giving master classes and delighting summer festival audiences throughout North America.

Laplante’s recordings include works by Liszt, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Brahms. His performance of Jacques Hétu’s Piano Concerto No. 2 won the 2004 Juno Award, as well as the Western Canadian Music Award.

The critic Ken Winters said: “Laplante is not only a great pianist, but also a great musician, aurally absolutely inside the music’s fabric and momentum.”
