Synopsis: Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in The Post, a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post’s Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers – and their very freedom – to help bring long-buried truths to light. The Post marks the first time Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have collaborated on a project.

RUMBLE: THE INDIANS WHO ROCKED THE WORLD (SC Film Soc) (Feb 17) 2pm

Genre: Doc/Music
Canada 2017
Runtime: 103 min
Trailer: Rumble

Directors: Catherine Bainbridge, Alfonso Maiorana

Synopis: This film is a celebratory examination of the suppressed role of Canadian and American First Nations writers and performers, and their contributions to popular music. The title comes from “Rumble”, the 1958 smash hit, instrumental single by Shawnee musician Link Wray, which was widely banned from airplay in the US.
Through dynamic archival footage, photographs, and a series of fascinating interviews with a variety of pop-culture celebrities and commentators, the film finely balances biographical sketches with historical context to finally reveal this long overdue missing chapter.

The Rolston String Quartet—Luri Lee and Jeffrey Dyrda, violins; Hezekiah Leung, viola and Jonathan Lo, cello—was awarded first prize at the prestigious 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition. That same year, the RSQ was listed among the CBC’s “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30.” A winner of Philadelphia’s Astral 2016 National Auditions and the 2016 John Lad Prize, the RSQ was also the grand prize winner of the 2016 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.

Formed in 2013 at the Banff Centre’s Chamber Music Residency, they take their name after the Canadian violinist Thomas Rolston, the esteemed founder and long-time director of the Music and Sound Program at the Banff Centre.

“What great jubilance and exuberance these fresh-faced players radiated, and what a thrilling cohesion of phrasing and tone.” (The Broad Street Review)
